Growing Up
It's sad when your kids grow up. They seem to outgrow the cute baby clothes faster than you can put them on them. Then all of the sudden they start school and have friends and can do things on their own. But I've come to realize that there are also a lot of benefits to kids growing up one of which is being old enough to stay at Grandma's house all by themselves just because they want to.
Eli and Isaac have been at Chris' parents house for the last two nights and I must admit that it has been great. Chris and I sat in church yesterday and I literally didn't know what to do with myself during the sacrament. I had to keep reminding myself to think of Jesus because that is what you're supposed to do. You see, when you've spent the last 5 1/2 years trying to keep children quiet you forget what you are supposed to be doing. Chris was nice enough to whine to me about when he got his treat just to help me feel more at home.
As an added bonus it was our Ward Choir Christmas Program. Being able to sit there and pay attention was wonderful. Three years ago we blessed Isaac on Christmas Eve on our first Sunday in our current ward. On that day it was also the Christmas Program. During that program there was a gentleman who sang "O Holy Night." With the spirit of the day that song really touched me and the way he sang it was so beautiful. It has been my favorite Christmas song ever since but I have never been able to find a version that I liked as much as the random person who sang it on that Sunday. (He wasn't in the ward, he is a son of someone in the ward.) So, imagine my surprise and joy to see on the program yesterday that he was there again singing that same wonderful song. It was a Christmas miracle. I wished I had some sort of recording device but it was enough to hear it again and feel the spirit of that beautiful hymn.
That song and the fact that I could sit and listen without worring about loud kids, not to mention the two full days without kids where I have been able to actually get something done, have been the best part of my Christmas season so far.
